My property lawyer has requested from me proof of ID documents asserting that this is part of his retainer as a conveyancer on the GE Money Conveyancing panel. This is news to me - can I refuse?

Whilst your website is a good idea there are many lawyers listed near London on the GE Money conveyancing panel. It would be a lot more helpful if you could recommend a specific firm on the GE Money approved panel?
We do not recommend specific firms as the right firm for you depends on where your priorities lie. For example you may require a local firm with local knowledge or you might be looking for the low cost conveyancing. We recommend that you speak to 3 or 4 lawyers listed before you make your choice..
I am selling my house. Does my solicitor have to be on the GE Money conveyancing panel in order to deal with paying off my mortgage?
Ordinarily, even if your lawyer is not on the GE Money conveyancing panel they can still act for you on your sale. it might be that the lender will not release the original deeds (if applicable and increasingly irrelevant) until after the mortgage is paid off. You should speak to your lawyer directly before you start the process though to ensure that there is no problem as lenders are changing their requirements fairly frequently at the moment.
Are all solicitor practices on the GE Money conveyancing panel overseen by the SRA?
As a firm of solicitors, in order to be on the GE Money conveyancing panel they would need to be regulated by the Solicitors Regulatory Authority. Many lenders do allow licenced conveyancers on their panel in which case such firms would be regulated by the Council of Licensed Conveyancers (CLC).
My brother and I have had an offer accepted on a flat I spoke to a solicitor recommended by my brother and he suggested retaining a property lawyers approved by GE Money. The estate agent recommended two local firms so I asked GE Money if the 2 suggested solicitors are approved, which they are not. GE Money pointed out that either practice can fill out the appropriate forms to become approved. Do I (1) save myself the aggravation and use one of GE Money 's conveyancing panel solicitors (2) Use the local solicitor and accept there may be delays etc as they go through the approval process.

Intending to buy a house with a mortgage with GE Money. I have received an online quote from a licensed conveyancer, which states: "There will be no charge for dealing with the Building Society if you are obtaining a mortgage". I take this to mean that there will be no additional fee if the solicitor is on the GE Money conveyancing panel. I wanted to make sure it means there will be no additional fees for dealing with the mortgage.
They are simply saying that the cost for acting for the lender is included in the fee being quoted. It is worth you checking that they are on the GE Money conveyancing panel
